Elizbar Ramazashvili | Published FR: Jul 27, 2026 05:58 am Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is the sixth expansion for Final Fantasy XIV and is scheduled to launch in January 2027.

After the announcement at the Anaheim Fan Festival, Square Enix showed the extended trailer at the Berlin Fan Festival and revealed lots of new information about the upcoming expansion.

Note that many of the reveals hold unmarked spoilers, so proceed carefully if you haven’t finished the story of Endwalker and Dawntrail .

Table of contents What is Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold?

Evercold kicks off the Godless Realms Saga and sends the Warrior of Light to the Fourth reflection of the Source.

Warrior of Light is summoned to the world lost to ice and has to face a new threat called the Solstice.

The expansion’s main setting, the Fourth, is a frozen wasteland, its people taken to the skies to escape the ice and monsters that came with it.

Evercold does not explicitly continue the story of Dawntrail ; instead, it kicks off a new multi-expansion saga.

This leaves Dawntrail in an awkward spot: it was supposed to be a lighthearted beginning of a new arc, but at some point, possibly due to negative feedback the expansion’s story received, Square Enix decided to leave it as an interlude before properly introducing the new storyline.

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold release date and platforms New Nordic-inspired location.

The expansion is confirmed for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac, and Steam.

Square Enix has not announced an exact January release date yet.

The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV launches earlier , on Aug. 4, 2026, with the usual free trial and two editions, with Evercold also coming to Nintendo’s new console along with every other platform in January.

New Evercold job: Bastion New job for the Warrior of Light.

Image via Square Enix The first new Evercold job is Bastion, a tank that uses a pair of greatshields called Skyltborg.

Bastion is a main tank, and the job is playable only with the new Evolved Mode rather than Reborn Mode.

Bastion starts at level 90, and its starting quest begins in Limsa Lominsa.

The job uses defensive and offensive tools, with the Skyltborg acting as both shields and aetherial artillery.

Evercold has two new jobs in total, and we know that the second job is a physical ranged DPS, but its name, weapon, and gameplay details have not been revealed yet.

More information is planned for the Tokyo Fan Festival in October.

New areas in the Fourth During the Producer Keynote at the Berlin Fan Festival, Naoki Yoshida revealed new areas the expansion will be set in.

People of the Fourth have built huge airships to avoid the clutches of ice on the ground.

Two of those airships are Naglfar, the Realmship of Water, and Hringhorni, the Realmship of Fire.

The developers also revealed Fargarth, a city on Naglfar.

Evercold gameplay and system changes The level cap increases from 100 to 110 in Evercold .

The expansion also adds Seasons, a new reward and item level framework, plus an Armoury Update aimed at making it easier to play multiple jobs on one character.

The battle system is being split into Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode, with Reborn Mode being based on the current combat system.

Evolved Mode is supposedly designed around stronger job identity, as the job homologation has been the strongest gameplay-related criticism the game has been constantly receiving for the past several years.

The main scenario also gets a much-needed structure change, as the previous several expansions followed the exact same narrative and quest progression.

After a specific point, players can choose the order of certain areas, while Auto Content Balancing adjusts applicable field enemies, duties, item levels, drops, and party matching based on character level.

Character customization and action skins New FFXIV gear.

Image via Square Enix Evercold expands character customization with a new color picker, more detailed adjustments for features like eyes and lips, additional makeup options such as eye shadow, and removable parts on certain gear.

Customizable Action Animations are also coming in Evercold .

The system lets players change animations for general and job actions, giving characters more visual personalization beyond gear and glamours.

It’s currently unknown how widely these animations will be available, or if they’re to be earned or even purchased through the Mog Station.

Evercold raids and endgame content Evercold includes the new alliance raid series EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire.

An updated teaser for it was shown at the Berlin Fan Festival, revealing that Mahiro Maeda is a special guest artist and designer on the project.

Maeda worked on many iconic anime projects like The Animatrix and Gankutsuou, with his biggest claim to fame being involvement with the Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo production, as well as art and design for the Mad Max: Fury Road movie.

FFVII collaboration.

The raid series is being developed with collaboration from the Final Fantasy VII Remake team.

Eight-player raids are also getting a new difficulty between Normal and Savage, though it wasn’t revealed what it’s called.

Evercold also includes a new Ultimate raid, new trials, new dungeons, FATEs, hunts, treasure hunts, PvP updates, Duty Support updates, new gear, and new crafting recipes: all the stuff you usually get with any new expansion.

Chocobo Companion updates Chocobo Companions are getting expanded during the Evercold patch cycle.

The planned changes include an overhaul to chocobo raising and the ability to call a Chocobo Companion inside dungeons, meaning the players will now be able to run dungeons in duos along with their trusty Chocobos.

This overhaul is planned for Patch 8.1, which will likely come out 3 to 5 months after Evercold is released.

Evercold Collector’s Edition Like every expansion, Evercold will also get its physical and digital Collector’s Editions.

The physical Collector’s Bundle includes a special art box with Yoshitaka Amano artwork, a Warrior of Light Reaper statue, a Tapestry of the Fourth, an Ethos metal keychain, and a Köttr mini plush.

All of these in-game items are also included in the physical edition.

What is still unknown about Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold?

We still don’t know the exact January 2027 release date or its price.

Usually, every new expansion is $40, and it’s expected that Evercold will cost the same, but we still don’t have any official confirmation.

Square Enix has yet to show a detailed description of Bastion’s abilities, and we also don’t know what the second new job is.

We’ll likely get all of this information and more at the final Fan Festival of the year in Tokyo this October.
