Summer Freebies Are Here, and They're Actually Good

Look, I'm a sucker for a free game. My library is a graveyard of titles I claimed on a whim and never launched — but that doesn't stop me from refreshing the Epic Games Store every Thursday. July 2026 is shaping up to be a particularly generous month across the board. If you've been meaning to pad out your backlog or just want something new to play without spending a dime, this is your month.

Between the usual suspects — Epic, Prime Gaming, PlayStation Plus, Xbox Games with Gold — and a few surprise giveaways, there's a solid mix of indie darlings and bigger-budget titles up for grabs. Here's what you can claim before the clock runs out.

The Big One: What Epic's Giving Away

Epic Games Store hasn't slowed down its weekly freebie train. For the first two weeks of July, you can grab Arc Raiders — the co-op extraction shooter that's been in early access for a while. It's a tense, loot-driven romp that's best with friends, and it's free to keep forever. That alone is worth the five-minute account creation if you haven't already.

Later in the month, Epic is offering Alien: Isolation. Yes, the terrifying stealth horror game where you hide from a single, hyper-intelligent Xenomorph. It's been out for years, but it holds up incredibly well. If you've never played it, now's your chance to scream into a pillow at 3 AM.

Prime Gaming Keeps Delivering

Amazon's Prime Gaming is often overlooked, but July's lineup is sneaky good. Subscribers can claim Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown — a blistering arcade flight sim that makes you feel like a total badass. Also up for grabs: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, a narrative-driven strategy game that blends mechs, time travel, and high school drama in a way that somehow works.

Prime Gaming also throws in a few in-game loot drops for Among Us and Fall Guys, if you're still into those. Nothing life-changing, but free cosmetics are free cosmetics.

PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass

PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers get three games this month: Animal Well, the brilliant metroidvania where you play as a blob exploring a surreal underground world; Alwa's Legacy, a charming retro-style platformer; and Archvale, a bullet-hell RPG that's tougher than it looks. All three are solid picks, especially Animal Well — it's one of the most inventive games in years.

Over on Xbox, Games with Gold is still chugging along (yes, it's still a thing). July brings Aegis Defenders, a side-scrolling action game with tower defense elements, and Alwa's Awakening, the predecessor to Alwa's Legacy. If you've got an active Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription, these are yours to keep.

Why So Many Free Games Right Now?

Summer has always been a slow season for major releases. Publishers use free games to keep players engaged, build goodwill, and — let's be honest — collect data on who's claiming what. Epic and Amazon are in a long-term battle for your attention, and giving away games is the cheapest way to keep you coming back to their storefronts.

It's also a smart move for developers. A free week on Epic can introduce thousands of new players to a game that might have flown under the radar. For indies like Animal Well or Alwa's Legacy, this kind of exposure is huge.

Not Everything Is a Win

Before you clear your calendar, a few caveats. Some of these games are older — Alien: Isolation came out in 2014, and Ace Combat 7 is from 2019. If you're a completionist who's already played most of these, July might feel like a rerun. And if you're not subscribed to Prime or PlayStation Plus, you're locked out of those offers.

Also, "free" doesn't always mean "yours forever." Epic and Prime giveaways are yours to keep, but PlayStation Plus games are only accessible while you have an active subscription. If you let your membership lapse, you lose access. That's the fine print nobody reads.

August is shaping up to be quieter, but there are whispers that Epic might drop a surprise AAA title later in the summer. Keep an eye on the usual sources — and maybe set a reminder on your phone for Thursday mornings. I know I will. My backlog isn't going to fill itself.
