Here’s a surprise: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s open beta is coming next month. Activision confirmed two playtest windows in a blog post today, with the first kicking off August 21st for pre-order customers and the second—free for everyone—running from August 28th to September 1st.
If you were hoping to skip the pre-order and still get a taste, that open weekend is your window. The pre-order “weekend” is actually five days, because words are worthless.
Why This Matters
The big draw this year is a brand-new mode called Kill Block. It’s a 10v10 multiplayer map that reshuffles itself between rounds, swapping sections in and out like a live-training course. Activision is betting this keeps the chaos fresh and players coming back.
Kill Block isn’t just another quick-fix mode—it’s a structural change to how maps play over time. That’s the kind of thing that can shift the meta if it works.
How We Got Here
This year’s Modern Warfare campaign centers on a North Korea–South Korea conflict, with Captain Price doing his usual gravel-voiced shenanigans. The beta is the first chance for non-pre-order players to see how that translates into multiplayer pacing.
Activision is also promoting the Vault Edition, which unlocks early operator skins and weapons during the beta. The publisher is clearly trying to convert fence-sitters into pre-order buyers before the October 23rd launch.
“Get ready to drop into multiple Multiplayer maps and modes, choosing from a wide selection of brand-new Operators, including all the Vault Edition Operators for players who pre-order the Vault Edition.”
That’s from the official blog post. The beta also includes 19 unlockable weapons and a Training Mobility Course for warm-ups.
But the real test is Kill Block. If it clicks, Modern Warfare 4 could have a mode that keeps lobbies populated long after launch. If it doesn’t, it’s just another flashy gimmick.
The Bigger Picture
One notable absence: Xbox Game Pass won’t carry Modern Warfare 4 at launch. Microsoft’s decision to skip day-one subscription access for this year’s CoD reflects a broader shift in how the company is valuing its own library versus third-party blockbusters.
That means pre-order numbers and beta turnout will be even more important for Activision’s Q4 revenue. The beta isn’t just a demo—it’s a sales funnel.
What’s Next
The open beta runs August 28–September 1 across all platforms. Full game launches October 23rd on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Expect a flurry of trailers and kill compilations in the weeks between.
