Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins is coming to Webtoon as a free prequel, with the first three episodes launching August 4, 2026. The full first season is planned for 56 episodes, plus five Fast Pass episodes available through Webtoon's paid system.
Webtoon and Dark Horse revealed the series during Webtoon's entertainment panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The comic follows Vox Machina before the party became the legendary group fans know from the original actual-play campaign, Critical Role, and Prime Video's animated adaptation.
The official premise is very much in character: a mysterious curse hits the coastal town of Stillben, and six would-be heroes with separate goals end up fighting each other before they can fight together.

That last joke is doing a lot of work. The series is selling Vox Machina as heroes who start messy, selfish, and unstable, then slowly become the team whose reputation eventually stretches across Exandria.
A free Webtoon launch lowers the entry barrier
For readers, the important part is access. The first three episodes are free, which means new fans do not need to commit to a full digital comic run before deciding whether they want more. Existing Critters get an easy way to revisit the team's early chaos without waiting for a new campaign or animated episode.
This is also the second Critical Role title to arrive on Webtoon. Dark Horse previously brought Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins to the platform, reformatting Campaign 2's origin story for vertical-scroll reading.
That shift matters because Webtoon is built around phone-first consumption. A 56-episode fantasy prequel is not just a comic drop here; it is a serialized library designed to fit into commutes, breaks, and the kind of background scrolling where readers can lose an hour without noticing.
Why Webtoon and Dark Horse are leaning into Exandria now
Webtoon and Dark Horse expanded their relationship in June 2025, bringing major fantasy and sci-fi franchises like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 to the platform. Critical Role fits that strategy well because it already has multiple audience paths: tabletop fans, animated-series viewers, stream followers, and comic readers.
The business logic is straightforward. A property like Critical Role benefits from being everywhere a fan might already be, while Webtoon benefits from IP that comes with built-in loyalty and lore. Dark Horse gets another way to keep its catalog alive beyond physical releases and collectible editions.
There is also a content-library angle. Streaming fantasy hits often create demand that outpaces new episodes, new books, or new campaigns. Digital comics can fill the gaps without requiring the same production overhead as animation or a full live show.
That is why Vox Machina Origins feels less like a side project and more like part of a broader expansion plan. Exandria has already spread across Geek & Sundry, Critical Role, Prime Video, novels, games, and tabletop play. Webtoon gives that world another low-friction doorway.
The story is for fans, but it is not only for hardcore fans
The prequel format gives new readers a useful map. Instead of meeting Vox Machina at peak legend status, the comic shows the messy formation stage: six people who are not yet a team, not yet fully trusted, and not yet ready to save the world.
That setup can help casual readers understand why the party works later. The strongest fantasy ensembles are not just cool groups of characters; they are collections of clashing habits, wounds, ambitions, and running jokes. Seeing that friction up front makes the later teamwork feel earned.
