Former Wreckreation team starts up new studio working on sequel

Fiona Sperry is back. The former Three Fields Entertainment boss has announced When Tides Turn, a new studio already at work on a sequel to last year’s arcade racer Wreckreation.

Sperry founded Three Fields in 2015, shipping Dangerous Golf and later Wreckreation under publisher THQ Nordic. But just months after Wreckreation launched in October 2025, the entire team was placed on redundancy notice.

Now Sperry is starting fresh — and she’s doing it differently this time.

Why This Matters

Wreckreation was a promising arcade racer that mixed open-world driving with a sandbox creation mode. A sequel could refine that formula, but only if the studio survives long enough to deliver it.

Sperry’s approach is explicitly community-driven. In a LinkedIn post announcing When Tides Turn, she wrote:

“The games we make don't really belong to us once they're out in the world. Players spend hundreds of hours with them. They notice things you've forgotten. They challenge your assumptions.”

Rather than disappearing for years, Sperry says the team will develop in the open — sharing progress, listening to feedback, and letting players shape what comes next.

How We Got Here

Three Fields’ collapse was abrupt. Despite Wreckreation launching on October 28, 2025, Sperry said the studio wouldn’t see revenue from game sales “for the foreseeable future.” Development for most of 2025 and all post-launch content had been self-funded.

The publisher, THQ Nordic, reportedly went through a spree of layoffs in 2025, including the closure of Alone in the Dark developer Pieces Interactive. “Without the enthusiasm or financial support from our publisher to continue development, we simply cannot sustain the studio in its current form,” Sperry said at the time.

The Bigger Picture

Sperry’s “develop in the open” philosophy mirrors a broader industry shift toward early access and community funding. It’s a bet that transparency can replace the publisher safety net that failed her before.

Whether that bet pays off depends on whether players are willing to invest time — and money — into a sequel before it’s finished. Sperry is betting they will.

“Over the last six months I've had some amazing conversations, reconnected with old friends, made plenty of new ones, and been overwhelmed by the encouragement and support people have shown me.”

She calls When Tides Turn the first studio she’s started entirely on her own. No publisher safety net. Just a team, a vision, and a community she’s counting on.

Deadfire

What’s Next

The Wreckreation sequel is early in development. Sperry hasn’t announced a platform, release window, or even a final name. But the studio is open for business, and the team is listening.

If you were hoping for more arcade racing chaos, this is the first sign of hope since Three Fields went dark.
