As you explore the new Fangs of Asterkarn DLC for Grim Dawn , you may come across Tainted Meat , a mysterious quest item that drops in the Dread Wastes area. While it looks like it belongs at the nearby Purifying Altar , simply offering it there is actually a dead end. Tainted Meat is instead used in a multi-step process to destroy the Glacial Wall in Ulo’s Springs and unlock the optional Kruu’Sul Crags area. Here is what you need to do. Where to Get Tainted Meat in Grim Dawn Close Getting Tainted Meat is actually the easiest part in Grim Dawn . Once you reach the Dread Wastes, it drops from Manged Bristlehorn enemies — large, bull-like corrupted beasts surrounded by a distinctive red chaos glow. There is no limit to how many you can carry, but solving what it’s used for is not immediately obvious. Tainted Meat is connected to the Purifying Altar, located in the Dread Wastes, right near the Black Citadel rift (image above). Upon approaching the altar, you can offer 1 or 5 Tainted Meat to it, depending on how many you carry, but don’t bother: it simply consumes the items and does nothing useful. At first, I thought there might be a threshold to reach, so I tried feeding it large amounts of Tainted Meat, but nothing happened. Close Here’s the solution to use the Tainted Meat as intended: Collect 10 pieces of Tainted Meat Progress through the Black Citadel until you meet the NPC Dulgirr – Treacherous Dealer . Buy the Inert Sphere from him (need 37,500 Iron Bits ). Return to the Purifying Altar. A new interaction option will now appear: offer 1 Inert Sphere + 10 Tainted Meat. This combines the items into a new quest item: Magma Sphere . How to Use the Magma Sphere in Grim Dawn Close Once you have the Magma Sphere, open your rift and teleport to Guardian’s Sorrow rift in Ulo’s Springs . You might remember the massive Glacial Wall blocking the path from your earlier visit. With the Magma Sphere in your inventory, simply approach the wall to melt it and open the way forward. The sphere is consumed in the process, as it’s a single-use item. Beyond the melted wall lies a vast new valley. Follow the path to discover and activate the Kruu’Sul Crags rift . Exploring the full area will also bring you closer to Drang’Gal Fortress on the map, but there’s a catch. As of now, you cannot enter Drang’Gal Fortress — it is planned as a future Challenge Dungeon. Unlike previous DLC, Fangs of Asterkarn will feature two Challenge Dungeons instead of one, though they will be added in later updates. In the meantime, feel free to explore Kruu’Sul Crags fully, and consider saving some Skeleton Keys for when the fortress becomes available. Melting the glacier barrier also unlocks the Glacial Warming achievement in Grim Dawn .
