Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed plans for five new Spider-Man films in active development, including a live-action Miles Morales standalone movie — and that changes everything about the direction of the MCU's friendly neighborhood hero.
The Announcement
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly during a press round for Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige revealed that Marvel is mapping out Spider-Man's theatrical future well into the next decade. The five films span multiple projects: two more Tom Holland-led entries, a live-action Miles Morales debut, and two additional projects currently described as "spider-adjacent" spin-offs. No release dates were given, but sources close to Marvel indicate a rollout strategy beginning in 2027.
The Miles Morales film marks the character's first live-action big-screen appearance outside of the animated Spider-Verse universe. Feige confirmed the script is being developed "with fresh eyes" but declined to name a director.
Why This Now
Marvel needs a new anchor. Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man is gone. Chris Evans' Captain America has passed the shield. The MCU's multiverse saga has been a mixed bag critically, and Spider-Man remains one of the few characters capable of carrying a $1 billion franchise single-handedly.
But Sony holds the film rights to Spider-Man, meaning every collaboration requires careful negotiation. The 2019 Disney-Sony standoff nearly ended the partnership entirely. Feige's announcement signals that both studios have found a longer-term working rhythm — and they're betting big on the character's future.
"We're not just making another trilogy," Feige said. "We're building a street-level universe that can coexist with the cosmic stuff."
The Miles Morales Factor
Bringing Miles into live-action is the most significant development here. The character's popularity has exploded since Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2019. A live-action version has been rumored for years, but Feige's confirmation makes it official.
“Miles represents the next generation,” Feige said. “Tom will always be our Peter Parker, but the world is ready for both.”
The question is how they'll introduce him. Options include a standalone origin film, a supporting role in Tom Holland's next movie, or an insertion via the multiverse. Industry insiders expect a post-credits scene in Spider-Man 4 to tease his arrival.
Counterpoint and Skepticism
Five films is an aggressive bet. The superhero box office has cooled post-Endgame, and audiences have shown fatigue with franchise-building. Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter — Sony's non-MCU Spider-Man offshoots — flopped critically and commercially this year alone.
There's also the issue of oversaturation. Watts directed three Holland Spider-Man films in four years. Spinning up a separate Miles narrative alongside two more Holland films and two spin-offs risks splitting attention. Marvel's own Secret Invasion and The Marvels proved that more content doesn't always mean better dollars.
Feige acknowledged the challenge: "We're not just throwing scripts at the wall. Each movie has to earn its place."
What Comes Next
Expect concrete announcements at D23 or San Diego Comic-Con 2025. Spider-Man 4 is furthest along, with a draft by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers reportedly nearing completion. Miles' solo film would follow in 2028-2029 if the timeline holds.
Marvel is betting that Spider-Man can do what the Avengers once did: provide an emotional center for an increasingly sprawling universe. Whether audiences will feel the same connection to Miles as they did to Peter after three Holland films remains the open question. But one thing is clear: the web-slinger isn't going anywhere.
