Arc System Works just dropped three new character guides for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, covering Blade, Black Panther, and Danger — and timing is everything. With the open beta launching in just a few days, these breakdowns are meant to get players familiar with each fighter's toolkit before they hit the lab.
Blade’s Stake-and-Slash Game
Blade of the Samurai Outrunners plays around a key mechanic called Heart Seeker — a stake he plants into an opponent that powers up his next skill. Once it’s in, he can unsheathe Muramasa for heavy burst damage and empower two subsequent skill attacks. His arsenal also includes a boomerang-like glaive and a submachine gun, giving him solid mid-range pressure and mixup potential.
Black Panther’s Follow-Up Focus
Shuri, the current Black Panther from the Fighting Avengers, uses Bast’s Blessing to cancel into follow-ups after most skills. Activating the Heart-Shaped Herb converts her Skill Gauge into extra Blessings, enabling rapid, lethal combos. She’s designed for players who want to keep the pressure on without letting the opponent breathe.
Danger’s Drone Chess
Danger of the Unbreakable X-Men is all about setup. Her Calibrate drones interact with her beam and missile attacks in multiple ways — she can teleport to them, use them for fake-outs, or chain into longer combos. Gurren Lagann fans will also recognize her Tōkon Assemble move, which fits her high-octane, stage-control style.
All three characters — Blade, Black Panther, and Danger — will be playable in the open beta running July 24–26. Arc System Works will also host a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where they’re expected to reveal more about the Year 1 DLC roster.
Why the Rush?
Arc System Works has been accelerating its character reveals recently, likely to build momentum ahead of the beta and Comic-Con. The faster cadence gives the community less time to theorycraft but more time to go hands-on. It’s a smart move: get players into the game rather than just watching trailers.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is shaping up to be a tag-team brawler with deep combo systems and character-specific quirks — not unlike A Short Hike is a departure in tone, but the granular design philosophy carries through. The question is whether Arc System Works can balance fast, flashy play with readable neutral for a mainstream audience.
What’s at Stake
This open beta is the first real chance for the public to judge the game’s feel. Activision Blizzard hasn’t been involved here — this is pure Arc System Works, and their pedigree (Guilty Gear Strive, DBFZ) sets high expectations. If the beta lands well, it could solidify pre-orders. If it doesn’t, the Comic-Con DLC reveal might need to do heavy lifting.
Either way, keep an eye on the July 24 beta and the SDCC panel for the full Year 1 picture. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls could become the next fighting game staple — or just another licensed fighter. The next few days will tell us a lot.
