Build a Rocket Boy has quietly changed the ending of MindsEye in its latest update, dropping players into an entirely new world and introducing a mysterious figure who greets protagonist Jacob Diaz. The new conclusion, spotted by social media account Everywhere NET, also introduces concepts like Jacob being "the first of the chosen" and reincarnation — a significant narrative shift for the single-player campaign.
Update 8 Overhauls the Story's Finale
Update 8, released this week on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, is being called one of MindsEye's biggest updates yet by developer Build a Rocket Boy. The studio said the patch "deepens the single-player experience," though the official patch notes only listed the Silva E-Series: Summer Circuits time trial race across the Redrock desert as a single-player addition.
Digging deeper, the notes reveal a rework of the "A Strange Happening" mission, giving players a new cave to explore. But the real bombshell is the altered ending — a change that reframes the entire narrative and sets up what appears to be a larger universe for the MindsEye franchise.

Grenade Football and Other New Content
Headlining the update is Grenade Football, a competitive multiplayer mode that pits teams of five players each against one another. Players use grenade launchers to score goals in a fast-paced, explosive sport — a chaotic addition that pairs oddly with the story changes.
The previous major update, Blacklisted, released in April, introduced missions where players took on the role of assassin Julia Black, tasked with taking down two high-profile targets for the Meridian agency. That update arrived amid controversy after studio CEO and CTO Mark Gerhard claimed MindsEye had been affected by saboteurs.
“We’ve got very strong evidence of this and conducted quite thorough investigations over the months since launch. We’ve identified parties involved, and it’s now with the authorities both [in the] U.K. and U.S. to deal with.”
Layoffs and Protests Cloud the Release
May 2026 saw Build a Rocket Boy hit with a new round of layoffs affecting around 170 workers, confirmed by audio designer Tom Cross, lead designer James Tyler, QA analyst Gary Iain Gough, and level designer Leah Philpot via LinkedIn. Earlier this month, former employees organized a protest against an "all-expenses-paid playtest day" meant to foster community interaction while workers were being let go. The protest was organized by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain.
The timing of Update 8's story changes — amid layoffs and allegations of sabotage — raises questions about the studio's stability and direction. The new ending introduces a much bigger world and lore, but it's unclear whether Build a Rocket Boy has the team and resources to follow through on what it's now setting up.
What the New Ending Means
The revised finale confirms that MindsEye is positioning itself as more than a standalone narrative. By introducing reincarnation and the concept of "the chosen," Build a Rocket Boy is laying groundwork for sequels or expansions. But the shift also risks alienating players who were invested in the original ending's resolution.
For now, players who want to see the new conclusion will need to replay the game's final mission. Whether this is a genuine creative pivot or a response to internal turmoil remains to be seen — but it's one of the most dramatic post-launch story changes in recent memory.
