If you've ever wanted to buy Lumbridge, slap a house on it, and charge other players rent, Jagex has you covered. Pre-orders for Monopoly: RuneScape Edition opened today, with the custom board game shipping this October for $59.99 / £49.99.
What's on the board
The RuneScape twist on the classic board game replaces familiar properties with locations from Gielinor. Lumbridge and Varrock are available to purchase as low and mid-tier spots, while the elven city of Prifddinas takes the place of Boardwalk as the most expensive real estate on the board. Instead of houses and hotels, you'll build houses and castles. And forget Monopoly money — you're collecting GP.
Six RuneScape-themed tokens replace the standard iron, thimble, and dog. Players can choose from Bob the Cat, a party hat, a Dragon boot, a cabbage, and two other yet-to-be-revealed pieces. Transport spaces become ports like Port Sarim and Port Khazard, while the utility spots are taverns, including The Blue Moon Inn.
This isn't Jagex's first tabletop swing
The Monopoly edition follows two previous board game collaborations with Steamforged Games: RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg and RuneScape Kingdoms: The Roleplaying Game. Jagex has been steadily expanding the RuneScape brand beyond the MMO itself, and a mass-market board game like Monopoly is a natural next step. It's the kind of licensed product that sits on Target shelves next to Activision's Call of Duty Monopoly and other video game variants.
Who is this for?
This is clearly aimed at RuneScape veterans who want a physical piece of Gielinor on their game night table. The limited edition label suggests it won't be a permanent fixture, so fans who want it should act fast. At $59.99, it's priced in line with other specialty Monopoly editions, not cheap but not outrageous for a collector's item. The tokens in particular — a cabbage, a party hat, a Dragon boot — are deep-cut nods that only players will appreciate. If you've never chopped a tree or died to a dark wizard in Lumbridge, this board probably isn't for you.
The bigger picture: video games on the tabletop
RuneScape joins a growing list of video game franchises making the jump to board games. Alan Wake got a board game. Alien: Isolation is getting one. Even Albion Online has dabbled in tabletop. The trend makes sense: board games offer a lower-cost, higher-margin way to extend an IP's reach and give fans a tangible product. For an MMO like RuneScape that's built on nostalgia and long-term player investment, a Monopoly edition is a logical fit — it trades on familiarity and shared memory.
A note of caution
Licensed Monopoly editions have a mixed reputation. Some, like the Star Wars or Pokémon versions, are well-loved. Others feel like cash-ins with a logo slapped on a standard board. The RuneScape edition at least appears to have customized tokens and property names, but whether the game plays differently — or just looks different — remains to be seen. At this price point, buyers are paying for the theme more than the mechanics.
What to watch for
Pre-orders are live now through the official RuneScape merch store, with a planned October release. Given the limited edition status, it's worth grabbing early if you're interested. Jagex hasn't announced a production run size, so availability may be tight. For now, start saving your GP — real-world GP, that is.
