If you’ve been waiting for a look at what’s next for Pokémon TCG Pocket, you won’t have to wait much longer. A brand-new trailer for the Ruler of the Skies expansion drops tomorrow, July 23, at 9 AM Eastern. The team behind the mobile card game teased it on social media with a simple, ominous message: “The descent draws near.” That’s about as direct as Pokémon gets when something big is coming.
What We Know So Far
The expansion, first revealed back in June, is built around Mega Rayquaza—the legendary Dragon/Flying type that’s been a fan favorite since its debut in Pokémon Emerald. It’s set to launch on the mobile game Android and iOS on July 30. That’s just a week after the trailer. A physical companion set, called Delta Reign, hits Japan on July 29 and arrives in English-speaking territories on November 6. So if you prefer shuffling real cards, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
The timing isn’t random. Back in May, Pokémon TCG Pocket crossed 200 million downloads worldwide—a staggering number for any mobile game, let alone a digital card game. Around the same time, dataminers uncovered hints of a Raid Mode being added to the app. That could mean cooperative battles against tough AI opponents, which would be a fresh twist for a game that’s mostly been about quick one-on-one matches. The Ruler of the Skies trailer might finally confirm that feature.
The Big Picture
All this momentum is building toward Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, which kicks off next year. The company has been pulling out all the stops lately. Over on the Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon Pokopia has been selling like crazy since its March launch—millions of copies, by the sound of it. And the next mainline Gen 10 games, Pokémon Winds and Waves, are slated for 2027. The TCG Pocket expansion feels like another piece of that larger puzzle: keep the mobile audience engaged while the core franchise preps its next big leap.
But let’s not get too carried away. The Pokémon Company has explicitly stated it has “no plans” to turn TCG Pocket into a major competitive game. So while we might get Raid Mode and flashy new cards, don’t expect a World Championship circuit for your phone anytime soon. That’s probably fine—the game works best as a quick, casual collection experience, not a hardcore esport. Still, it’s worth keeping an eye on how the expansion changes the meta, especially with Mega Rayquaza likely bringing powerful new abilities.
A Few Skeptical Thoughts
One thing that gives me pause: the physical Delta Reign set releasing just a day earlier in Japan means we’ll know exactly which cards are in the digital expansion before it even drops. That could spoil the surprise for anyone hoping to discover new cards organically. Also, Raid Mode sounds great in theory, but if it’s anything like the co-op modes in other mobile card games, it might require a lot of grinding or premium currency to be fun. We’ll see.
There’s also the question of how much longer the game can sustain its growth. 200 million downloads is huge, but mobile game retention is notoriously fickle. A new expansion and a new mode could keep people around, but the AI arms race in mobile gaming means competitors are always trying to steal your attention. Pokémon has the brand power, but it’s not invincible.
