You know, sometimes the gaming world throws us a curveball that hits a little too close to home. Cliff Bleszinski, the man behind Gears of War, recently opened up about his struggles with alcohol during the development of the series, and honestly, it hit me right in the feels. I mean, here's a guy who helped shape gaming history, yet was battling his own demons while creating some of our favorite titles.
Bleszinski shared in an interview with 80 Level that his drinking started during a press tour for Unreal Tournament back in 2003 when someone handed him a bottle of vodka. As he puts it, “You go to your GDCs, you go to your E3s, you have three nights in a row of going to parties…” It’s a familiar scene for many of us in the industry, right? But when your job revolves around partying, it’s no surprise that habits can spiral out of control.

Bleszinski candidly admitted that the Gears of War trilogy was developed while he was “a functioning alcoholic.” And while that might sound like a badge of honor to some, it’s a tough reality that many in the creative fields face. It’s easy to get lost in the party scene, especially when your success is tied to how well you can entertain.
"Eventually, my body was like 'Fuck you,' and I realised this is me hitting a wall..."
After a seizure earlier this year, he hit a turning point. It’s a harsh wake-up call when your body says enough is enough. He’s now on the road to recovery, and I’ve got to say, it’s refreshing to see someone so open about their journey. He wants to be remembered as more than just a guy who fought addiction; he wants to be known as a successful game designer and a great husband. That’s the kind of redemption story we love to root for.
In the meantime, Bleszinski has kept himself busy. He wrote a memoir called *Control Freak*, dabbled in comic books, and even co-produced the Broadway hit *Hadestown*. He described that experience as “redemption,” which I can totally understand. Sometimes, stepping away from the spotlight can lead to some unexpected triumphs.
But here’s the kicker: he’s not done with games. Bleszinski expressed a desire to get back into game development, which is exciting news for those of us who grew up with Gears of War. He mentioned a consulting gig on an asymmetrical horror game called *Soul Walker* that reignited his passion. And I gotta say, I’m here for it. “At the end of the day, I want to create characters and worlds,” he said. That’s what we need—more storytellers in the gaming industry who understand what makes a game truly resonate.
What’s next for him? He’s leaning more towards PvE these days, which makes sense considering how much fun we’ve all had in Horde mode. “Horde mode saved Gears 2,” he noted, and I can’t help but agree. There’s something about teaming up with friends to fend off waves of enemies that just never gets old. It’s all about the camaraderie, the laughs, and the occasional scream when things get really intense.
With a new Gears of War installment, *Gears of War: E-Day*, set to drop on October 6, fans have a lot to look forward to. And with Horde mode making a comeback, it’s a good time to be a fan of the franchise. Bleszinski’s journey is a reminder that even the best among us can face challenges, but it’s how we rise from those challenges that defines us.
So, here’s hoping Cliff Bleszinski makes a triumphant return to gaming. After all, the world could always use more characters and worlds worth getting lost in.
