The next major moment for Marathon arrives today with a new update and the debut of its PvE mode, Vault Breaker

Bungie just dropped a new gameplay trailer for Marathon's Vault Breaker mode, and it's live today. This is a time-limited PvE roguelite event that runs for two weeks, ending August 4th.

It's not a simple PvE toggle you can flip on across the rest of the game. Vault Breaker is its own thing, contained to the Cryo Archive map and playable solo, in duos, or trios. Anyone can jump in, regardless of Runner level.

How Vault Breaker Works

Matches play out like a roguelite: you raid Vaults, fight UESC enemies, and decide when to extract. Vaults get tougher over time, and the choice of when to bail is yours. You don't bring your normal loadout—instead, you pick a pre-made Sponsored Kit that you upgrade between runs using Vault Data.

Everything—except event currency and rewards—will be turned into Vault Data.

That Vault Data feeds back into your starting kit for future runs. The more you invest, the stronger you start. But here's the kicker: gear you extract with in Vault Breaker can't be used in the normal PvP modes. So no farming runs to get an edge against other players.

The only crossover is through the Vault Breaker Armory, where you can spend Vault Data on items and gear for use outside the mode. There's also a nice newbie-friendly touch: kill a USEC Commander during a run, and you'll get Tier One Vault Data even if you don't extract.

Why This Matters

This is Marathon's first real PvE offering since launch, and it arrives at a rough time for Bungie. The extraction shooter has been struggling since its debut, and news broke last Friday that director Joe Ziegler left the studio after just four months. The team was also hit by major layoffs recently, with the Destiny team taking the brunt but Marathon losing developers too.

Vault Breaker feels like a low-stakes test—a way to gauge interest in PvE without committing to a full mode. But Bungie has already confirmed that a proper PvE mode is coming in Season 3. Details on how integrated that will be are still under wraps.

This matters because Marathon needs a win. The extraction shooter genre has been crowded, and Marathon hasn't grabbed the spotlight like Bungie hoped. A limited-time roguelite mode won't fix everything, but it's a signal that the studio is listening to players who want more PvE options.
