Mighty Doom Developer Alpha Dog Games Rises Again as Independent Studio After Xbox Closure

Mighty Doom developer Alpha Dog Games has returned to independent ownership two years after being closed by Microsoft. Studio founder Shawn Woods confirmed the mobile specialist is now independently owned by its founding team and is in discussions with partners and publishers about future projects.

Two years after being unceremoniously shut down by Microsoft, the studio behind Mighty Doom is back. Alpha Dog Games is once again an independent studio, owned by its founding team.

Studio founder Shawn Woods confirmed the news in a statement to Game Developer, saying the team is "incredibly excited to have the name we put so much effort and pride into building back in our hands." It’s a rare second chance for a mobile developer that was caught in the crossfire of Microsoft’s post-Activision Blizzard belt-tightening.

A Rare Second Chance

Alpha Dog Games was one of three studios Microsoft closed in May 2024, alongside Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. The decision came just months after the company completed its $69 billion merger with Activision Blizzard, and was framed as part of a push to prioritize "high-impact titles." Tango Gameworks was eventually salvaged by Krafton, but Alpha Dog seemed gone for good.

Now, two years later, the studio has pulled off something close to a miracle. Microsoft worked with the team to transition the studio back to independent ownership rather than simply dissolving it. Woods acknowledged that directly, saying "we’re grateful to Microsoft for working with us through the transition."

It’s a small but meaningful bright spot in an industry that has spent the last few years bleeding talent and studios. Since the Activision merger, Microsoft has conducted five rounds of mass layoffs, most recently cutting 3,200 roles across its gaming division. Multiple anonymous sources recently told Game Developer that key Xbox studios could "fall apart" after years of debilitating cuts.

How the Closure Happened

Alpha Dog Games was founded in 2012 and built a reputation as a mobile specialist. Microsoft acquired the studio in 2019, and it eventually developed Mighty Doom, a top-down mobile shooter that launched in 2023. The game was well-received, but it wasn’t enough to save the studio when Microsoft decided to refocus its resources.

The closure was announced in an internal email from Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, who said the decision was made to "prioritize high-impact titles." At the time, the move felt like a cold, corporate calculation. Two years later, it still does — but at least this particular studio gets to try again.

Woods says the team has been "continuing to invest in the studio’s technology and development foundation" during the transition, specifically updating key parts of the Unity-based engine framework that powered Mighty Doom. That gives them a head start as they figure out what comes next.

What’s Next for Alpha Dog Games

The studio isn’t ready to announce specific projects yet. Woods said they’re currently in conversations with "partners, publishers, licensors, and more," which suggests they’re exploring both original IP and potential licensed work. Given their track record with Mighty Doom, a return to mobile games seems likely, but they’re not ruling anything out.

What’s clear is that the community still cares. Woods noted that "the excitement surrounding Alpha Dog Games over the past few days has honestly exceeded our expectations" and that the passion from players has reminded the team "just how special those experiences were."

For now, Alpha Dog Games is alive, independent, and figuring out its next move. That’s more than most studios that get caught in a corporate restructuring can say. And in an industry where closure is often permanent, that counts as a win.

Why This Matters

The revival of a studio previously shut down by a major platform holder shows that independent game development can survive corporate consolidation. It offers hope for other shuttered teams and signals that player passion can help resurrect beloved studios.

Background

Mighty Doom

Mighty Doom is a mobile game developed by Alpha Dog Games, released in 2023. It is a top-down shooter in the Doom universe, known for its fast-paced gameplay and roguelike elements. The game was a key title for the studio before its closure.

Microsoft's 2024 Studio Closures

In May 2024, Microsoft closed several studios including Alpha Dog Games, Arkane Austin (known for Prey and Redfall), and Tango Gameworks (known for Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within). The closures were part of cost-cutting after the $69 billion Activision Blizzard merger.

Tango Gameworks' Rescue by Krafton

Unlike Alpha Dog Games, Tango Gameworks was acquired by Krafton (publisher of PUBG) shortly after Microsoft closed it. This allowed Tango to continue operations and develop new projects, setting a precedent for studio revivals after corporate shutdowns.
