Andrej Barovic Published: Jul 25, 2026 2:19 pm Image via Remedy Entertainment On this day, 25 long years ago, the first Max Payne game was released. It was the first game in a series that would spawn two more sequels, one good one and one that had no idea who or what Max Payne is, and it remains one of the most influential and memorable noir action titles ever made. Recommended Videos Created by the now-legendary Sam Lake and his team at Remedy, Max Payne released on July 25, 2001, exactly a quarter of a century ago and about a month after I was even born. It was a gripping, dark, and emotional neo-noir game set in New York City, following a detective whose family was killed by drug addicts. It was written by Lake himself, who also gave the character his likeness, though he was voiced by the late James McCaffrey, who passed away in late 2023. Image via Remedy Entertainment/Steam. The first Max Payne was only available on PC for the first year or so and released on consoles (the first Xbox and the PS2) later on. Both it and its sequel were written and developed by Lake and his team, while the third game, arguably the worst in the series, was handled by Dan Houser and Rockstar Games. The game introduced several notable mechanics that’d later enter the mainstream, especially when it comes to its action sequences and shootouts, whereby Max Payne significantly popularized bullet time and slow motion to amplify its tense scenes. Call of Duty would start using these a few years after Max Payne , notably through its breach scenes in Modern Warfare and later installments. That’s just one example, though. It also had a very serious and uncompromising narrative, and Lake wasn’t scared to include some pretty disturbing and dark moments and plot elements, painting Payne as a truly troubled noir police officer. The third installment would make Michael Bay the character entirely, which I guess tracks with Houser’s writing style. We haven’t had a Max Payne title since 2012, i.e., when Rockstar released the third installment, though Remedy is working on remakes of the first two titles. However, it’s unfortunate that the company didn’t post anything to celebrate this major jubilee. 0 Andrej Barovic Tags: Featured Well Max Payne 0 Bookmark ( 0 ) Please login to bookmark Username or Email Address Password Remember Me Don't have an account?
